چکیده

A typical verbal-learning trial consists of two distinct phases, presentation of the material and attempted recall, or input and output. While many different patterns of input and output sequences can be and have been used in experiments, the two phases are necessarily separated in time. A reasonably small unit of material, such as an individual item, can practically always be recalled immediately after its presentation (Murdock, 1961a, b; Peterson, Saltzman, Hillner, and Land, 1962). In this sense the item is always "learned" when it is presented. If it cannot be recalled following a retention interval, however short, it must have been "forgotten" during that interval. This paper is concerned with intratrial forgetting of individual list items, i.e., with forgetting as it occurs within a single learning trial. Intratrial retention intervals of individual items are filled with inputs and outputs of other items. These two kinds of intervening activities can be regarded as two sources of intratrial interference responsible for forgetting of the critical item. If a list of, say, ten items A, B, C, . . . , I, J, is presented to S in this order and at a fixed rate, and S is then asked to recall these items in the same order and at the same rate, the length of the intratrial retention interval is identical for all items, but the particular combination of intervening inputs and outputs varies for items in different serial posi-

The Effects of Presentation and Recall of Material in Free - Recall Learning 1

The results of two free-recall learning experiments, in which the number and sequential combinations of input and output phases were systematically varied, indicated that (a) recall tests facilitate the overall immediate post-input recall approximately to the same extent as do the events occurring in input phases, (b) input and output events are approximately equally responsible for forgetting ...

Can Inspirational Quotes Help the Recall of Abstract Vocabulary?

The present study investigates the potential impact of inspirational quotes on improving English abstract vocabulary recall. To achieve this, a multiple-choice Oxford Quick Placement Test (OQPT) of 60 items including vocabulary and grammar component was administered as the proficiency test to a sample of 63 second-semester male and female students aged 18 to 22, studying English Translation in ...

Effects of Recall Tests on Long-Term Retention of Paired Associates 1

Forty Ss were given 5 or I0 paired-presentation training trials on paired-associate items followed immediately by 0, 1, or 5 unreinforced recall tests. The effects of the immediate test trials were to increase substantially long-term retention, as measured either by error frequency or respons e latency, to increase stereotypy of both correct and incorrect responses, and to reduce the frequency ...

Interference from previous distraction disrupts older adults' memory.

OBJECTIVES Previously relevant information can disrupt the ability of older adults to remember new information. Here, the researchers examined whether prior irrelevant information, or distraction, can also interfere with older adults' memory for new information. METHOD Younger and older adults first completed a 1-back task on pictures that were superimposed with distracting words. After a del...

Episodic memory in schizophrenic patients and their relatives.

BACKGROUND Memory dysfunction among healthy relatives of patients with schizophrenia suggests that genetic liability to the disorder can also be manifested as cognitive impairment. This study was designed to further elucidate the nature of the memory dysfunction being transmitted. METHOD Memory function was assessed in 62 schizophrenic patients, 98 of their healthy relatives and 66 controls. ...
